The 3 C’s Of Winning
Composure, Confidence, and Consciousness
The best performers, athletes and people in the world possess 3 major traits. Composure during stressful and uncertain times. Confidence to embrace the moment and situation. Consciousness to think, be and embody their best self and express that. Think about the ‘moment’ in sports when the game is on the line, the crowd is screaming, this is the make it or break it play. The ability to stay composed and not let the environment or situation be too big for you.
Composure means “the state or feeling of being calm and in control of oneself.” The question is how would one practice composure? What is the action/ visualization to create and practice composure? The answer is exposure creates composure. There's many ways in which a person can be exposed. Exposure in the sense of how you are going to show up when the pressure is on. It can be simple things as your whole team has an extra gasser if you don’t make the play. It can be as simple as a timed hand eye coordination where you have to stay focused, stay calm and be in the moment. It can be as simple as holding your breath as long as you can. In some way, to create composure is to be exposed to something challenging, something difficult, something uncomfortable, and showing up as your best self. It can be a competition drill; one person versus another, the losing team has punishment, the winning team gets to relax. Developing a new player's ability to handle the pressure, the stress, and the environment will significantly impact their ability to perform at a high level in any circumstance and any situation.
Confidence: the feeling or belief that one can rely on someone or something; firm trust. Also a feeling of self-assurance arising from one's appreciation of one's own abilities or qualities. The confidence of a person directly impacts their ability to be their best. Mike Tyson said on his podcast “Never stop believing in yourself. The power of belief is just unbearable, impregnable. Confidence breeds success, and success breeds confidence, confidence applied properly will surpass a genius. There's nothing like belief. The reason I’m here is because of belief.” Confidence is the difference in a lot of things. Confidence is an essence and energy that is contagious in everything a person does. Confidence doesn’t come out of nowhere. It's the result of something.. Hours and days and weeks and years of constant work and dedication.” - Roger Staubach. When it comes to performance and athletics you can feel the confidence of a person by the way they walk, talk, and show up in everything they do. “With confidence, you have won before you started”- Marcus Garvey. So if you want to be the best, you have to breathe the best, think the best, feel the best. Thats the essence of Confidence.
Consciousness is the state of being awake and aware of one’s surroundings, and able to think. It also means the state of being characterized by sensation, emotion, volition and though: mind. In performance and sports the better you can slow the game down, be aware of the little details and clues of the game, the better you will perform. The better you can see the weakness of your opponent, the more you will take advantage and dominate. Your ability to be aware, and use your mind's full capacity to perform your move, will give you an advantage for the next play. The best athletes and performers are so conscious and so aware t
hat they have seen and created every possible scenario. Then they trust their instincts and play. In the preparation, in practice they prepared themself and now they are adapting to every and any situation that is presented. The best athletes can make adjustments, can adapt or change their move. Because they are using the fullness of their brain. Fully conscious of every movement, every noise, every part of their being is engaged and connected from their brain to their breath to their body to fully complete the process.
